What you should do before calling an investigator:

Have a clear idea of what result or outcome you want.
Hiring an investigator is like buying an airplane ticket. Before you get to the ticket kiosk, you have to know where you are going.
Asking for an estimate before knowing the destination is like asking, "How much is an airplane ticket?" It depends on where you're going.

Know your budget.
Think about what that result or outcome is worth to you. Once you decide where you're going, decide how much you’re willing to pay to get there.

For example, surveillances fees typically cost anywhere from $400 to $1,600 or more per day, depending on the complexity of the surveillance.
The more difficult the subject is to track, the operating environment, and degree of proof required, the greater the number of agents and hours that may be required to accomplish your objective.

If you haven’t considered what you’re willing to pay to accomplish your objective, this is a good time to think about that.
Although we are very successful at what we do, professional investigators can be expensive, and may exceed what the objective is worth to you. We do promise 100% effort, but the outcome of an investigation is not possible for anyone to guarantee.
Select an agency that specializes in providing the services or information that you require.
As with most professions, investigators are typically specialists. Hiring an investigator that hasn’t demonstrated success in your area of concern isn’t likely to yield the results you’re looking for, get the work done in the time frame you had in mind, or accomplish the assignment within the budget you had established.
In an age of specialists, you want to be sure that the investigator you choose is experienced with your area of concern. The best investigators are those who do few things, but do them very well. Focus on experience and availability before shopping rates.
EXPERIENCE: Experienced investigators can save you money by being more efficient; this includes being faster in processing casework and knowing where to go and how to get it done.

If it takes the low-rate investigators more hours to achieve the same objective, you've saved nothing; if they aren’t able to realize your objective, or collect evidence in a way or from a source that makes the evidence inadmissible, you’ve wasted the money and perhaps having your case rejected by the judge, or losing the element of surprise during a surveillance.

AVAILABILITY:
Quality, experienced investigators are typically booked days, weeks, or more in advance. If you contact an agency that can begin work immediately, you might ask yourself why they’re not otherwise engaged. Perhaps it's lucky timing, or perhaps there are other reasons.

RATES:
Rates may be a useful metric when comparing two agencies that have the same experience and track record for success.
Otherwise, as a general rule, inexpensive rates are more an indicator of inexperience than value, an agency desperate for business, or one that subcontracts work out on a flat-rate basis to people who have no investment in the quality of work product they deliver.
Nowhere is this more true than in surveillance.

Hiring an inexperienced or incompetent investigator because their hourly rate is lower is often a false economy.
On the other hand, merely paying a higher rate is no guarantee of expertise. If a prospective investigator can't justify their rates with experience and success, their rates may be inflated to create the illusion that they are "the real thing".

Although our experience can be invaluable in assisting you with navigating the often-confusing maze of accessing records, obtaining proof, and determining where the truth lies, it is important that you realize, as a Pro Se client, that a Professional Investigator is NOT an "Attorney Lite."

We are neither trained nor licensed to provide legal counsel. If, in our opinion, your case would best be served by consulting a lawyer, we can recommend attorneys who specialize in your area of concern. Your attorney will know what is the evidence she or he needs, and work done when your attorney is our client is then protected by the attorney-client privilege. If the type of investigation you need is not a good fit for us, we'll be glad to help you find an agency who is better suited.
